Successful Opening of the First-Year Meeting for Undergraduates of the School of Physical Science and Technology in 2023

On the morning of October 21, 2023, the first-year meeting for undergraduates of the School of Physical Science and Technology in 2023 was successfully held in room X2218 at the Xipu Campus. The event was attended by the Secretary of the School of Physical Science and Technology Party Committee, Liu Yu, Deputy Secretary and Vice Dean Guo Jian, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of the school, Yong Teng, academic advisors, and all the 2023 freshmen. This meeting was hosted by Yang Haojian, the academic advisor for the 2023 class.


First, Secretary Liu Yu delivered a comprehensive, engaging, and light-hearted ideological and political education session to the 2023 freshmen, covering four main aspects: "The Spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China," "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," "The Spirit of the 15th Party Congress of the University, and What the School of Physics Should Do," and "Remaining Committed to One's Ideals, Becoming Cultivated and Responsible New Generation Youth." He expressed the school's dedication to maintaining its initial aspirations, utilizing available resources, emphasizing the "Four Engagements," and nurturing each student to help them grow and succeed.


Following this, Secretary Guo Jian conducted a career education and planning session with the theme "Dreams as Horses, Not Wasting One's Youth." He engaged with the new students on four topics, namely "The Transition from High School to University," "Characteristics of University Life," "Preparing for University Career Planning," and "How to Design Your University Life." He emphasized the importance of cultivating character, fostering a certain spirit, developing a sense of responsibility, and acquiring various skills during their university journey. Guo Jian also introduced the overall situation of the school and the construction of class culture and encouraged each class to create their class development plans to strive for excellence. He shared the outstanding resumes and common qualities of several physics graduates who had received the "Excel and Strive Award" and encouraged the new students to maintain a sense of progress and believe that "it's never too late to start, and there's always room for improvement!" Guo Jian also engaged the students in discussions about safety education and internet literacy, underscoring the importance of adhering to the university's student discipline regulations, prioritizing safety, maintaining good health, and enjoying every day.


The third item on the agenda was a special interpretation of the "Second Classroom" given by Ms. Ge Tian-tian. She provided a detailed explanation of the "Undergraduate Comprehensive Quality Evaluation Method (Trial)," including the requirements and specific evaluation methods for morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor education. She emphasized the importance of balanced development in all five dimensions: morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor.


Next, Ms. Wang Na provided a special interpretation of the "Third Classroom" for the new students. She explained the "quantitative hours," "implementation methods," and "graduation requirements" for the Third Classroom, encouraging students to actively participate in activities organized by the School of Physics' Youth Volunteer Association and demonstrate the gratitude, dedication, and responsibility expected of university students.


Finally, under the organization of Mr. Yang Haojian, all new students learned about the relevant management regulations and rules for undergraduates at Southwest Jiaotong University and completed a psychological health assessment. He summarized the meeting, addressed any questions from the students, and expressed hope for the 2023 class, encouraging them to be proactive and diligent in their studies. With this, the first-year meeting for the 2023 undergraduates of the School of Physical Science and Technology concluded successfully.
