The First National Conference on Stellarator Physics and Engineering Technology was successfully held at the Emei Campus of Southwest Jiaotong University from March 24th to 26th, 2023. The conference was jointly organized by the Plasma Physics Division of the Chinese Physical Society and the Fusion Physics Division of the Chinese Nuclear Society, and hosted by the Institute of Fusion Science of the School of Physical Science and Technology at Southwest Jiaotong University. More than 100 experts and scholars from the field of nuclear fusion research across the country attended the conference.

Shen Huoming, a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Southwest Jiaotong University, warmly welcomed the experts and scholars attending the conference on behalf of the university. He expressed sincere gratitude to the research institutes and universities in the field of fusion who have given enthusiastic care and help to Southwest Jiaotong University for a long time. Liu Yu, the Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Physics Science and Technology, and Jia Huanyu, the Vice Dean in charge of the conference, also attended the conference. Professor Jia Huanyu delivered a speech on behalf of the School of Physics Science and Technology.

In recent years, China has made rapid progress in the research of Stellarator physics and engineering technology. Southwest Jiaotong University has actively conducted research on advanced Stellarators and construction, and represented China to join the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme on Stellarators and Heliotrons (IEA SH-TCP). In addition, it has cooperated with other domestic fusion research units to apply for and win the first national special project on magnetic confinement nuclear fusion energy development related to Stellarator research.

Professor Xu Yuhong, the director of the Institute of Fusion Science at Southwest Jiaotong University, said that achieving fusion energy generation as soon as possible has become a common goal of major industrial countries in the world. Stellarator, with its advantages of easier steady-state operation and no major disruption, has become one of the main technical routes for human development of controlled magnetic confinement fusion energy. In recent years, besides Southwest Jiaotong University, other units such as University of South China, Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, and the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have also actively carried out scientific research and laboratory construction related to Stellarator.

The conference will open an important academic exchange platform for domestic Stellarator physics and engineering technology, as well as three-dimensional plasma physics research, which will effectively promote cooperation, exchange, and sharing of results among domestic counterparts, and make positive contributions to the research of national magnetic confinement fusion energy development.
